Summary
Made to be entry-level zero turn mowers, the Poulan Pro P46ZX and P54X are some of the most affordable models available today. Their aggressive pricing does not sacrifice much quality however as they are also some of the best performing models in the the category. They features a conservatively sized 46”/54” deck which houses two individual blades powered by the large 22 Horsepower Briggs and Stratton Engine. Outside of their smaller than average cutting width, they contains many of the same parts as Poulan’s more expensive models. For example, its Hydrostatic Transmission is found as a standard in even the best of their mowers. At such a competitive price, the P46ZX and P54X are one of the best values for the money in the zero turn mower category.
Pros:
- One of the cheapest models on the market
- Turns on a dime with an effectively zero turning radius
- Capable of towing objects thanks to its strong engine and hook
- Manufactured by Husqvarna, one of the biggest names in all types of mowers
- Made for large lawns
- Compatible with many different attachments
- Electric blade engagement
Cons:
- Compared to other ZTR mowers, the cutting deck is small
- Is not the best at riding up steep slopes
- Max speed is only 6 MPH
- High backed seat makes it slightly difficult to turn around
Performance:
The P46ZX is yet another great model in Poulan’s new Pro line of mowers. It comes with many convenient features that make controlling it a pleasure, and we believe that it is very accommodating to both beginners and advanced users alike. Even with its smaller than average deck size, it mows at a moderately fast pace of 2.4 acres per hour. This mowing rate depends heavily on a wide variety of conditions such as rider weight, terrain, and weather conditions. Its turning abilities are exactly as described, and it will essentially rotate in place on demand. The wheel speed and rotation is controlled by two levers not a steering wheel, but they are very easy to use after some practice. We found that the engine was powerful enough to tow some lightweight items for various gardening tasks, but if you are looking for more heavy-duty utility, a lawn tractor is probably more suitable. The mowing blades were precise enough and provided a pretty clean and even cut. All-in-all the P46ZX is a great zero turn mower for individuals looking for an entry-level model.
Final Thoughts:
Because Poulan is owned by Husqvarna, we expected this mower to be of a superior quality to other models in this lower price bracket, and that is exactly what we saw. It performed extremely well with smooth turning around turns and perfect rotating abilities. The many generations of improvements made by the company are made evident in this sleek, black mower. With its smaller size, it is made for private use on lawns up to 5 acres, and we highly recommend it to individuals who own property that falls within the aforementioned range.
